Shri Pratap Singh Museum is a heritage museum that provides insight into the history and traditions of Kashmir. It was established around 1898, after General Raja Sir Amar Singh and Captain S.H. Godmerry proposed the idea of a state museum to the Dogra ruler Maharaja Pratap Singh. After the approval of this idea, the museum was set up in a state building in Srinagar under the supervision of Sir John Marshal from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). During its initial days, the museum housed artefacts like shawls and armoury from Tosh Khana. When the archaeological department was reorganised, excavated exhibits from different parts of Kashmir were preserved here. Later, decorative household items and several other articles were added to the collection of the museum. In present times, the museum boasts of an impressive assortment of precious antiques and artefacts that speak volumes about Kashmir's regal heritage. Divided into several galleries based on time periods and other factors, the museum interests people who love to explore history and culture of different places. Starting with the Archaeological Section, visitors get a chance to know about the beginning of human civilisation in the valley. The Numismatics and Manuscripts section displays precious coins and texts that tell about the economic and literary development of the region. Weapons of warfare used during battles against various kingdoms are preserved here with care. Decorative items made of willow wood, paper mache, ceramic and glass are kept on display in one of the galleries of this museum. The fabulous collection also includes exquisite enamelled and metal ware used in old times. Famous pashmina and shahtoosh shawls are kept in the textile section. The Miniature Painting Gallery of this museum impresses visitors with beautiful mural artworks and delicate naqashi work.
